Dimethyl Sulfoxide, Reagent is an organosulfur, colorless liquid and is also known as DMSO. It acts as an important polar aprotic solvent bcause of its ability to dissolve both polar and non-polar compounds, as well as its miscibility with a wide range of orgnic solvents inculding water. One of DMSO's main characteristics is its ability to penetrate human skin. In the field of biology it is used in PCR as an inhibitor of secondary structures in DNA templates and/or DNA primers. It can also be used as a cryoprotectant, reducing ice formation in cell media and thus preventing necrosis of the cell during the freezing process.
