Chloroform, Stabilized, Spectrophotometric Grade, ACS is a colorless, sweet-smelling organic compound. It is a dense liquid and trihalomethane. It is commonly used as laboratory solvent, as it is relatively unreactive and conveniently volatile. It is also miscible with most organic compounds. Although its uses as a reagent are limited, it is used in organic synthesis in order to produce dichlorocarbene by reacting with sodium hydroxide. As an ACS grade quality reagent, its chemical specifications are the de facto standards for chemicals used in many high-purity applications and typically designate the highest quality chemical available for laboratory use.
