Chloroform, or trichloromethane, is a colorless, sweet-smelling organic compound that comes in the form of a dense liquid. IT has historically been used as an anesthetic, but is currently most widely used in the production of chlorodifluoromethane. It is also commonly used as laboratory solvent as it is relatively unreactive and conveniently volatile, as well as being miscible with most organic compounds. Although its use as a synthetic reagent is limited, it is used in organic synthesis to produce dichlorocarbene by reacting with sodium hydroxide.
