LED Replacement Flashlight Bulb, 74 Lumens for Most D and C Cell Flashlights, 1EA is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for many applications, but not all I bought this light source for my 6v lantern. Previously, I'd replaced the dead 6v battery with an adapter that takes 4 D cells so I could use rechargeable cells. I found that the Nite Ize replacement only uses a small part of the reflector because it doesn't radiate downwards. Because my lantern has a removable holder for the bulb, I was able to adjust the focus so it gives a bright (but funny shaped) spot at long range but a pair of concentric circles at short range. At short range, however, the non-reflected (direct) light from the LED is quite bright and this distorted spot is not a problem. The wide angle pattern at short range is much brighter than the incandescent it replaces and eliminates constant scanning of the lantern at close range.I'd would say if your lantern/flashlight has a deep reflector (most of the reflector forward of the filament of your incandescent bulb), you will probably have better results at long range than I do.Electrically, the device contains a switching regulator operating in the 60 KHz range to keep the power into the LED nearly independent of supply voltage within the specified range (if you have a scope you can see this in the supply current). This is a mixed blessing. If you're using a primary (non-rechargeable) 6v battery, you'll find the light output is nearly constant until the battery is exhausted - not much warning for low battery. If you're using a secondary (rechargeable) battery, watch out! When a battery is nearly exhausted, the individual cells will generally not reach their "must charge now" condition at the same moment. If you have 4 rechargeable cells, the light may be running on 2 cells by the time you notice it needs charging and by then the other two cells may be getting charged in reverse by the stronger ones and permanently damaged.I avoided this problem in my 6v lantern by modifying the holder from 4 cells to 2. The light drew 245 mA at 5.2v, and 354 mA at 2.6v. That's only a 30% drop in power, which believe it or not is hardly noticeable to the eye. It prevents battery damage and lets me always have a freshly charged battery to swap in with just the 4 NiMH cells I bought. If you use 4 rechargeable cells with this product I'd highly recommend doing this.
