2-Speed Belt Drive Whole House Fan, 30 In Blade Dia. is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have an ancient (at least 14 years old when we bought our house, but more likely about 25 years old) version of this 30" Dayton heavy duty whole house fan. Because of this fan, I have not needed to buy an AC unit for our house (though I did throw in about 24 inches of insulation in the attic 14 years ago to keep the cold (and heat) in the house). In the summer, I run the fan all night with the windows open, and shut down the house during the day, and our house rarely gets above 75 degrees even on the hottest 100 degree scorcher summer days. I love the fan, and every part of our older version seems to be pretty generic light duty industrial, so you can find spare parts (at Grainger or elsewhere) if it breaks (After 25 years of hard service, ours might need a new motor in a few more years, the belts have worn out a few times). I made a cover that screws to the ceiling out of 1 inch thick styrofoam sheet and a wood "picture" frame to insulate the louver during the winter. Definitely worth doing since it cuts down on cold drafts all winter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've had one of the 24" fans in my house for over 20 years, still going strong, only needed to replace the belt once and oil the fan and motor bearings yearly. It sure beats having to run the a/c when it's nice enough outside to have the windows open. Hint: If you're debating between two sizes, go for the larger one. If the high speed pulls more air than you want you can switch to the low speed, which is much quieter. If the hi/low speed switch goes bad you can use a heavy duty SPDT toggle switch or a 3-way light switch, both very easy to find at most hardware stores. If the timer goes bad, I would try a Grainger part# 3FXC6 or 3FXC8 (Intermatic part# FF312H or FF412H, respectively). These appear to be direct replacements for my original Dayton 12 hour mechanical timer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This fan works great but forget it if you need to replace the timer and switch that comes with these units. Granger can't supply them or even give you a part number. Why would all the fans come with the same two speed switch and timer but if it goes bad-thery can't even find a part number for any of the parts???????--Very poor product representation!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality product. Im glad i didnt buy the home depot model. Didn't realize how big the actual unit was going to be. Install will be easier if you have another person to help get it into the attic. Setting up a pulley system in the attic to help hoist it up is a plus. Preplan the clearance required to pull the fan through the opening in a vertical position. The fan moves Tons of air in a 2400sqft home even in the low setting. The sound of the fan on low is pretty close to sound levels of our dryer. The noise is mainly form massive amounts of air moving. I am pleased with the results so far. The high/low switch could be of better quality.
