Snow Blower, Clearing Path: 28 In , Fuel Type: Gas, 16 In Auger Diameter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from On my 3rd season and very happy! I purchased my Ariens HydroPro 28 in February of 2015. I figured I would get a couple of seasons under my belt before writing a review. Before I purchased the HydroPro 28, I was considering buying 2 machines, a lightweight, easily maneuverable, single stage machine for light snow and a larger two stage machine for the heavy stuff. The HydroPro 28 was a great compromise. I liked the idea of having the smaller 28" width coupled with the larger 420cc engine. I thought that if the same engine could drive a 36" auger set up, driving a 28" augers would be piece of cake. Additionally, the hydrostatic transmission really helps getting the speed just right when in operation. We just had our first real snow storm here in MA this season and the HydroPro 28 did a great job clearing the 12" of heavy wet snow that fell. You will get years of great service out of this machine if you maintain it properly. I change the oil at least once per season and make sure the rest of the machine is lubed via grease fittings/etc. At the end of the season, I store the unit with a full tank of gas with fuel stabilizer added. I run it for a little while to get the stabilized gas into the system and then turn it off for the season. There may be a "better" way to do this but I've been happy as the machine starts on the first pull 95% of the time. I do recommend buying the tire chains for extra traction. One note, the balance of the machine is slightly biased toward the rear. Ariens does make a 10lb weight kit that mounts on the front to help aleviate this. I haven't tried it and really can't comment on its effectiveness. However, I highly recommend putting together a small tool kit that has everything needed to change out broken shear pins. I put in socket drivers, wrench, hammer and punch, and extra shear pins in my kit. There's nothing worse than trying to find tools and spare parts when you need them most.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hydro Rocks 2 I have owned my 28" hydro pro for just over a year and can't imagine doing without it. Why didn't I buy one year's ago. When it snows this puppy calls me out to run. It eats snow for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This was the worst winter here just south of Boston with over six feet of snow. With just one pull this oversized engine purrs to life and at half speed she throws snow clean over the cars to the front yard. I did not give it five points for design only because the controls are not intuitive. I find myself, as others using it, stopping to think about what to grab next on the controls. I love the infinite shifting and the easy turning makes it a dream to use. If you are thinking of buying one, don't hesitate, Buy it!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Initial quality under par Problems: Engine leaked oil from main drive after one season Chute controls freeze up from water in cable Hydrostatic transmission reverse gear chatters. Need to have it serviced. Annoying residual snow trail on left side of auger so a good, clean driveway is not possible Chute rotate mechanism very finicky and will rarely lock in full right position. Need to keep tinkering with despite attempts to adjust linkages Goodness: Starts reliably Powerful and throws snow the full 50+ feet per specification. The hydro trans is worth every penny paid extra Quiet for a monster engine Built in snow brush is brilliant idea Room for improvement Hand Controls . My left hand and arm become fatigued after one or more hours of use. Right hand used for hydro trans so left is fixed on drive and ends up mostly for steering adding to fatigue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Live in Maine had a record breaking feb for snowfall.... Had a couple of storms over 2' and I clear more than 20,000 sq ft. Machine never hesitated once. more than a few times I would be snowblowing and people would come up and aske me what I had for a snowblower because they would see my ariens cut through snow that theirs couldn't even make it through. I will always buy and ariens from now on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Snow Beater This machine is the Monster Truck version of a 28 inch Snow Blower. It has more forward go power than the snowbanks can resist. If there is not enough traction just ease the drive stick back for a running start and power into the snow without fear of stalling out or clogging up. Love that hydraulic drive which makes direction changes quick and easy. The only modification I would like would be a little more leverage to move the shoot direction as it is a little stiff at max right and left while trying to hold the left lever engaged. This is a manly man's machine as it takes some strength to control it in some situations. But I still love it! Great job Ariens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't ask for more from a machine Wouldn't be fair to ask this much from a person.... the ability to increase speed on the fly is incredible, slow down near the road and spin with one hand, then speed up on the return pass. The machine throws snow like no other I've used. I had an old 5HP 1960 Ariens which was great, then an 11.5 hp from the late 90's until last year when I got this Hydro. Doing three driveways before work, this winter seems like every other day, average 200ft each. With this machine I can get them all done in under an hour. Including doing the 500 ft of edge of road between driveways. I make paths around my yard like a maze for the dogs. Even with the 18" storms no problem. The last storm was 3 inches of watery slush, I watched other neighbors struggle as My Hydro threw water off the driveway. Have had two relatives buy this machine this year after seeing what it could do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wanted a snow blower for the deep and heavy snows -... I wanted a snow blower for when it was a deep snow and/or a heavy wet snow. In February we had 19" and wind at 25-35 mph. I used the drift cutters and hydro pro 28 went through a 3.5' to 4' drift with no problem. It would have taken several hours and most likely a sore back to do with a smaller blower. The joystick control to aim the snow is fast and easy to use. It also started very easy every time with two primes. Great machine - thanks Ariens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a good machine Well first of all I already have and Ariens snowblower that is about 6 years old. It has been very very reliable. I then needed to buy another machine for some property I own and decided on the Hydro Pro 28. I got it delivered from a out of state dealer and it was in the original box from the factory. I had to do the setup myself. The instruction included were poorly written. Luckily the dealer had better setup instructions on their website. The problem I had was with the cable going to the chute control. The directions stated to go under the front panel on the handles (by the headlight), but the cable was to short to fit. There was a nice hole cut into the panel which is where it looked like it should go and that is were I put it, but the cable is too long and now hangs down beyond the chute shaft. This really bugs me. I had some other adjustment I had to make that were not in the instruction, like the chute deflector. It need to be tightened because it would pop open. The nut under the control panel need to be tightened to keep the level in the desired slot so it would not just randomly pop out. Other adjustment was on the speed selector. That need to be adjusted because reverse was not working. None of the adjustments were very difficult and I used my common sense to figure the adjustment out. Now on the 3rd storm of use the machine just died. It sounded like the engine blew. I pulled the starter cord and there was no resistance. I check everything I could think of and I finally checked the spark plug and the plug was out of the machine. The last 2 threads were striped on the plug. I replaced the plug and I got it to thread with my fingers for about a 1/4 of a turn and then I user a ratchet and slowly and carefully turned it with minimal pressure another 1/4 turn and then it turned in the rest of the way with my fingers. I was very happy so it seemed that there was not any significant damage. The machine started and was fine. So the plug must not have been tighten at the Briggs factory and it loosened any finally blew out when it reached the last few threads. I called Ariens and they were sympathetic and told me to call Biggs as it's under warranty. I am lucky that I was able to fix it even thought I should not have, but my machine would still be in the shop if I could not fix it my self because of the snow that we in Boston got and also because I did not buy it local, the authorized shops put you at the back of the line because I did not buy it from them. Overall I like the machine. It really is well made and it very heavy duty. There could improve on a few things like a little faster reverse and a lever to release the transmission bypass for moving the machine (it's next to impossible to move with out the bypass) instead of reaching down and releasing it. I still get confused sometimes using the hydro because I also use the other machine and they are so different. PS. This machine will blow the snow 60 ft. I am truly amazed how it goes thru any kind of snow. I was very glad I had it with the winter we had.
