Parabolic-flute drill bits have wide, deep flutes that improve chip flow and heat dissipation, which means feed rates do not need to be reduced as the drill moves deeper into the workpiece. The black-oxide finish on these bits retains lubricants to improve the bits' wear resistance and chip flow. Black-oxide bits should only be used for drilling ferrous metals. High-speed steel drill bits provide more flexibility and absorb more shock and vibration than cobalt and carbide drill bits, making them suitable for use in manual drilling machines and handheld power tools. They may leave a rough finish on the hole.

Taper-shank drill bits are directly inserted into the spindle, driving sleeve, or socket of a machine such as a drill press or lathe. This saves time when installing and changing out bits on the machine compared to other styles of drill bits. Taper-shank drill bits are self-locking, which means the friction between the bits and the tool holder keeps the bits in place, even in high-torque applications. These bits should not be used in a collet or chuck.
