According to the National Weather Service, life-threatening cases of hypothermia can happen even when temperatures are above freezing. Know how to recognize and treat this condition by familiarizing yourself with the signs and symptoms of hypothermia, and get more in-depth information here.

When someone's body temperature becomes abnormally low because of exposure to the cold, hypothermia is the result, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Hypothermia Treatment and First Aid

OSHA recommends this first aid for people with hypothermia:

  • In an emergency, call 911 immediately
  • Move the affected person to a warm, dry area
  • Take off wet clothing and put on dry clothing
  • Wrap the person in blankets and a vapor barrier (such as a tarp or garbage bag), covering the head and neck, but not the face

And, if medical help is more than a half-hour away:

  • Give warm, sweet, nonalcoholic drinks if the person is alert, but never try to give drinks to an unconscious person
  • Use hot packs or warm bottles to help warm the person’s core (armpits, sides of chest and groin), and get additional warming instructions from the 911 operator
