Acetylene produces a flame temperature of 5,700 °F when combined with oxygen, making it the hottest of all the fuel gases and the only fuel gas that can weld steel. For cutting, acetylene offers the fastest pre-heating and piercing times of any fuel gas. It has a low oxygen-to-fuel gas ratio of approximately 1.2 to 1.
Natural Gas produces the lowest flame temperature of all fuel gases when combined with oxygen, approximately 4,400 °F, and the lowest total heat output. It is the slowest fuel gas to initiate piercing and has significantly longer preheat times than other fuel gases. It also has a low oxygen-to-fuel gas ratio, of approximately 1.8 to 1, and is not suitable for welding steel due to its oxidizing characteristics.
Propane also referred to as LP Gas or Liquefied Petroleum Gas, propane produces a flame temperature of approximately 4,500 °F when combined with oxygen. Cutting speeds are limited due to the low heat output generated by its primary flame. Propane has a high oxygen-to-fuel gas ratio of approximately 4.3 to 1 and is not suitable for welding steel due to its oxidizing characteristics.
Propylene produces a flame temperature of approximately 5,300 °F when combined with oxygen. It generates high heat in both the primary and secondary flames, making it suitable for cutting both thin and thick steel. Like propane, it has a high oxygen-to-fuel gas ratio of approximately 3.7 to 1 and is not suitable for welding steel due to its oxidizing characteristics.
