Ratcheting box-end wrenches have a gear mechanism that allows the wrench to rotate freely in one direction without removing the wrench head from the fastener and repositioning the wrench. Wrenches have an enclosed head end that fits around and grips the entire head of the fastener. This design provides more contact to the fastener than an open-end wrench and can apply more torque since the box end is less likely to slip off the fastener compared to an open-end wrench.
