Gate-valve lockout devices install over the valve knob after it has been closed to prevent it from being turned and energy restored to the pipe. A padlock is required to ensure the device isn't removed by unauthorized personnel. These devices are an integral part of a facility lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure designed to meet the OSHA standard for the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout).

These lockouts open around a hinge on the side and fit loosely over round handles so the cover rotates freely when turned. They need more room around the handle than collapsible gate valve lockouts, so they're used where the handle is easily accessible from all sides.

Collapsible Gate Valve Lockouts
Collapsible gate-valve lockouts fit loosely over round handles so the cover rotates freely when turned. The lockout has two sides that nest together when open. One side slides to close around the handle, making these lockouts easier to install in cramped areas than hinged valve lockouts.

Plug Cap Valve Lockouts
These lockouts install over plug valves to prevent a handle or wrench from being used to open the valve. The lockout plate is attached to the valve stem and locked in place, then the cap is attached to the plate and secured with a padlock. The plate can be removed or left in place for reuse.
