Oldham coupling hubs and discs connect two drive shafts to transmit torque while absorbing shock, accommodating misalignment, and providing electrical isolation. Oldham coupling assemblies consist of two hubs and a plastic slotted disc that fits between the hubs. The slots on the disc connect with protrusions on the hubs and allow the hubs to move independently of each other. This makes them a good choice for applications with high parallel misalignment. They also act as torque limiter during overload, breaking the center disc cleanly to help protect machine components. Oldham couplings allow zero backlash and don't require lubrication. They are typically used in electric motor applications, such as shaft encoders, medical equipment, stepper motors, and servo motors.
