Thrust ball bearings have a small contact surface with the bearing raceway which reduces friction. Low friction allows ball bearings to run at higher speeds but with a lower load capacity than roller bearings. These bearings support axial, or thrust, loads in a single direction.

These grooved-race ball thrust bearings can be separated in three parts to ease repair and replacement. They have grooved raceways which help guide the balls and limit variations in the ball's movement. The grooves more closely fit the ball's dimensions which allows these bearings to handle higher loads than flat race ball thrust bearings.
