Thrust bearings support axial loads in a single direction. They mount perpendicular to the shaft and support rotating parts with light loads to reduce misalignment. They consist of rolling-elements that ride along two thrust washers, or raceways. Ball thrust bearings have a small contact surface with the bearing raceway which reduces friction and allows the bearing to run at higher speeds with a lower load capacity than roller bearings. Cylindrical roller thrust bearings have a wide contact surface with the bearing raceway which distributes load more evenly and supports higher axial loads in a single direction compared to ball bearings. Needle roller thrust bearings have a thin profile for applications where the radial space is limited and support high thrust load and high speed applications.
