Stainless steel is durable, resists corrosion from caustic chemicals, corrosive fluids, oils, and gases, and withstands pressure and high temperatures. Type 304 stainless steel, a chromium-nickel material, resists corrosion caused by water, heat, saltwater, acids, minerals, and peaty soils. Type 316 stainless steel has a higher nickel content than 304 stainless, plus molybdenum, for greater corrosion resistance from caustic chemicals, corrosive fluids, oils, and gases, and withstands pressure and high temperatures. 304 pipe connects with fittings to transport air, water, natural gas, steam, and chemicals to storage tanks and in residential plumbing, and kitchen and food applications. 316 pipe connects with fittings to transport air, water, natural gas, steam and chemicals in chemical manufacturing, industrial and chemical transportation, and food production and processing. Stainless steel is available in pipe lengths over 12" and nipple lengths 12" and shorter.
