Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is a strong thermoplastic that resists ultraviolet (UV) light, acids, alkalis, oils, and many corrosive inorganic chemicals, making it resistant to the corrosive effects of sewage. Lightweight PVC is nonflammable with good electrical insulation properties, and its smooth interior walls resist scaling. PVC pipe and nipples connect with pipe fittings to transport potable water, corrosive liquids, and sewage in industrial and commercial applications. PVC is available in pipe lengths longer than 12" and nipple lengths 12" and shorter.

Schedule 40 pipe has thicker walls than Schedule 10, but not as thick as Schedule 80 pipe. Unthreaded pipe includes plain ends without threads. Low-pressure (100-299 psi) pipe and nipples connect with fittings. Clear PVC pipe is used for quick identification and visual leak detection in medical/hospital use, chemical processing, and beverage processing.
