They operate in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band that penetrates steel and concrete to produce greater indoor range but less outdoor range than the very-high frequency (VHF) band. Their superior barrier penetration makes them ideal for warehouses, distribution centers, schools, hospitals, and urban areas. These two-way radios transmit and receive messages over radio frequencies that work where cellular coverage may be spotty, overloaded, or unavailable. UHF radios require a license, which is managed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The license authorizes use and allows assigning specific frequencies and privacy codes that prevent interference to support clear, uninterrupted communication.
