Shank-mount surface-conditioning discs have a straight shank and attach to a compatible arbor on die grinders and rotary tools to prepare surfaces for welding or finishing. Surface-conditioning abrasives remove surface imperfections and create a smooth surface ready for finishing in a single step rather than using different abrasives for removing and finishing. They're made of nonwoven material with an integrated abrasive that removes mill scale, surface rust, weld spatter, paint, and epoxy.

Silicon carbide is a sharp synthetic abrasive that provides a fine finish in low-pressure applications such as finishing and painting preparation. It breaks down faster than aluminum oxide.
