Adhesive-backed sanding discs remove rust and paint, clean and level welds, and prepare them for final finishing. Sometimes called PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) discs, they have a sticky backing that attaches to a compatible smooth-surface backing pad. Adhesive-backed sanding discs cannot be reapplied after removing, so they're a good choice for applications where grits aren't changed frequently and the abrasive is fully used before changing.

General purpose sanding discs optimized for use on all surfaces have an open-coat aluminum oxide abrasive applied to a paper backing. Aluminum oxide is a strong, sharp, and durable abrasive that penetrates the work surface and withstands heat and high speeds. Open-coat abrasives have grit on about 50% of the surface leaving space between the abrasive grains to prevent swarf from clogging the surface which keeps the workpiece cooler. The paper backing provides a smooth, flat surface to provide consistent pressure across the work surface. Compatible surfaces and substrates include paint, plastic, composites, gelcoat, fiberglass, and carbon steel.

High-performance sanding discs optimized for use on all metals have a closed-coat zirconia alumina abrasive applied to a paper backing. Zirconia alumina grains break down frequently to create fresh, sharp edges to cut and finish faster than aluminum oxide. It cuts cooler than aluminum oxide and is often used for high stock removal or under high pressure. Closed-coat abrasives have abrasive grain across the entire surface to provide a smoother finish and faster material removal than open-coat coverage. The paper backing provides a smooth, flat surface to provide consistent pressure across the work surface. Example metals include mild and carbon steel, cast iron, cobalt, titanium, and chrome.
