Type 27 (sometimes called type 42) has a raised hub to allow the wheel to contact the workpiece flat or up to a 45° angle. Sometimes called depressed center or raised hub wheels, they're reinforced with fiberglass to provide extra stability when working on an edge.
Type 28 has a depressed center and an edge that angles downward toward the workpiece for aggressive flat and shallow angle grinding up to 30°.
Type 29 has a depressed center and an edge that angles upward, away from the workpiece to increase contact area for flat grinding while reducing the risk of gouging during light stock removal, blending, and finishing applications.
Type 1 has the same thickness across the face and edge of the wheel.
Type 5 is recessed on one side for flange mounting from one side.
Type 6 is cup shaped with straight sides for surface and off-hand grinding of flat surfaces. They're usually installed on horizontal and vertical spindle machines.
Type 7 is recessed on both sides to allow the wheel to be mounted between flanges.
Type 11 (sometimes called flaring cup) is cup shaped to provide high surface contact area for aggressive grinding and snagging operations, surface preparation, and removing risers and parting lines from castings.
Type 12 has a narrow rim to provide access to hard-to-reach spaces.
Type 31 installs in a rotary grinder to grind flat surfaces.
