Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent digital scanner :) I have owned this scanner since May 2011 and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have two digital scanners, the 996XT and their former competitor, the PSR-600 and although the PSR-600 is a fine scanner, I much prefer the 996XT. The display is superior and is easy to read and provides loads of information, is very well lit and has a multi-colored back light that can change depending on what you're receiving, The buttons are also backlit and I especially love using the tuning knob versus having only up/down buttons commonly found on scanners. This is especially useful when searching for a signal, as a tuning knob is far better for tuning around the band and for navigating the scanners menu system than using up/down buttons. The 996XT has an excellent build quality with more overall features than the PSR-600, although it does tend to cost a little more. If you need the added features then it's well worth it. The free programming/control software is more than adequate and can program and control the scanner. Like most models, there is other third-party software that can be purchased. The scanner comes with a serial cable but a USB cable is also available for purchase if desired. The 996XT can be mounted in a standard (single) DIN radio slot (if desired), and the receiver can tune the FM broadcast band (88-108 MHz). However, it is mono output only but is more than adequate for news broadcast info if used to replace the vehicles FM receiver. The GPS feature is extremely useful and is unique to Uniden scanners and allows for a better monitoring experience. The 996XT is compatible with the RH96 remote head and can be purchased if desired in case you want to mount the scanner in the trunk, under the seat, or locked away in another part of the vehicle. This is yet another optional feature that is unique to Uniden scanner products. Fire Tone-Out is another feature I use and is also unique to Uniden scanners, and it works wonderfully and makes the scanner very useful if needed. Weather-Alert also works great and during the summer months the scanners also serves in this capacity. CTCSS & DCS decoding works perfectly. P25 reception is excellent, as is all other trunking types the scanner is capable of . The 996XT is a Phase-I scanner only and cannot monitor Phase-II or X2TDMA systems but if you don't have either of these systems in your listening area the 996XT is an excellent choice. After using my 996XT for the past two and a half years I am VERY pleased with it and love using it every single day. The BCD536HP was just announced as it's replacement (available January 2014) and is similar in design to the 996XT. I have always loved using Uniden scanners, and although I have other brands in my inventory, I prefer the 996XT because it has features not found in other brands and does everything I need it to do really well. I highly recommend the 996XT.Some have found this model to be difficult to use, program, etc. It does operate differently than older conventional, analog scanners, but for first-time users it's important to understand how current trunking scanners work. Joining a forum like RadioReference or Yahoo Groups (even YouTube) is a good way to get tips from people who own these scanners, which is exactly what I did. I also had to overcome the learning curve of this scanner but with a little practice you'll become an expert in no time. Then you'll realize how easy it is to use this device :) November 24, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Surprising features Once you learn how to program, it become fun to do it. November 18, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Dont waste the money The scanner is extremely difficult to program The directions don't explain much if you can skip around and try to find what you are looking for. The channel list cant be stored on your computer so you can add and remove before you hook it up it all has to be done over the internet and almost impossible to program manually. Most police depts. use encrypted signals if they use any at all a lot of traffic is done over the cell phone these days I have a lot of channels programmed in mine and I usually only get the weather channel to come in.My ham radio does a much better job of scanning the available police frequencies in my area. Rated 3 out of 5 by A great looking product but extremely poorly written instructions I have had several Uniden products over the years and have been mostly very satisfied, BUT I just purchased a BCD996XT and am extremely disappointed with the so-called 'web-based instruction manual' It is so poorly written it is virtually impossible to follow and it appears that a great deal of information has been left out. There is no index that will allow you to locate a specific item you might be working on or have a question about. The product might be great but DON'T try to fully understand the manual - it's impossible September 25, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by This scanner is great! it has everything I could need. I am very pleased with my scanner. I was not sure if the price would justify the product but it is worth it. The only issue I have had has to do with the directions. First of all, they are simple....but very complicated. With that I mean that one has to read the directions very very carefully to be able to get the scanner to do what you want it to do. The directions list a whole lot of pictures...but the explanations are very vague. I wanted to listen to the police and to the fire and rescue departments, I found the police..but have not been able to find the fire or rescue chanels. I LOVE my scanner! I just wish it was easier to use! (:O) February 12, 2012
