Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product but... It took me a while to learn how to program this scanner, but once I got it down it wasn't too bad until I had to update the firmware over this last summer (2013). Apparently, Uniden doesn't know that serial cables are obsolete and they make you buy a USB for programming. After I forked out that money, I went on the site to update the firmware and for some reason, it won't update. I can use the USB to program the scanner, but not to update the firmware? Now, I have a $500 paper weight...that is unless I want to fork over MORE money to Uniden so that they will update the firmware. But, when it was working, it was a great product. January 12, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by PIA PROGRAMING WAY OVER PRICED outdated serial programing cable. User must additionally purchase program software and USB program cable or hire MIT grad to program. Poorly supported. Socks would have been a better gift for Christmas instead of this thing.Very expensive paperweight. I suppose if I did not have a life, I would have the time it will take to program this thing! December 28, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not for the neophyte This is a good scanner, but the learning curve is too great for what most want and the User's Guide assumes you already know all about radios. Very OLD SCHOOL in giving a serial connector and making you purchase a USB connector. Should come with USB and make those who want GPS purchase the serial connector. The manual comes on a disk and is not searchable and assumes knowledge most do not have. To really listen in well you need this quality mode, but is made only for experts. Uniden really needs to reassess who their customers are and include quick notes for those who just want to get up and running. Also get rid of the preinstalled systems, only helps less that a quarter of the consumers and creates problems for the rest. December 28, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by NOT USER FRIENDLY Anyone without prior scanner programming is going to be lost.I knew I was in trouble when the CD that was in the box wouldn't work.I took it to a professional communication company and they were lost for awhile try to put frequencies in. December 16, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Has the best Features, BUT! This scanner would be about the best scanner ever if they could have put in a speaker that would last! I have another brand that is almost as good feature wise, but has a speaker in it! I have had to replace my speaker three times and am afraid to use it anymore for fear of blowing the speaker again.! Now I use my other brand for everything. I did find one good use for my BCD396XT, online broadcast, don't have to use the speaker! Not worth $500 to use for only online broadcasting! Rated 4 out of 5 by Great scanner, once you surmount learning curve The scanner preforms well, and has great functionality. The programing system takes time to learn. The "buttonology" definitely takes study and practice. The archaic programming cable is a point of frustration. Once you overcome these issues and get up and running scanner is a champ. Rated 1 out of 5 by Lack Of Cable I just bought the BCD396XT only to discover that the scanner to PC cable is obsolete. The USB-1 cable Uniden says is the remedy is out of stock. The RS232 has not been on PC for some time now. I have built 7 PC and none have the RS232 port. Uniden should send me, for free, a new USB-1 cable. As it stands I may return the unit. I am very disappointed. May 5, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by very good scanner so far I really like this scanner so far I bought it for the Apco 25 system that they have switched to in my areaThe only thing I have to say I do not like a bought the thing is it comes with a serial pug for computer programming and they have not put them on laptops for some time now I will have to go get a adaptor so that I can do some more programming from the computer they should start putting in USB plugs in the boxes for programmingbut all in all it is a great scanner so far March 12, 2013
