Rated 1 out of 5 by very poor reception and sound Very poor reception of signals. Many times will show carrier on screen for several minutes but have no audio. Will have no city transmissions for as long as 6 hours at a time. We all wish our community was that safe! Took it on patrol with me and it missed numerous calls that came over city radio. Sound is very poor quality, hard to understand many times. Had it back to R.S. several times and also back to Texas with no improvement. Right now to me it is a piece of junk. Will never purchase Uniden products again. November 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Over all an Interesting product My region is beginning the "digital age", they will be converting over very soon, hence the purchase of the Home Patrol. I have had mine now for 4 days. A few minor gripes, to what otherwise is an excellent product:1. Would be nice to allow direct entry programming of frequencies into the unit in a favorites category.2. Priority capabilities would be nice as well.3. I am in Virginia, Eastern Time Zone, the unit when set to this will not let me pick up my local frequencies. Reset it to the default Central Time Zone works w/o problems.4. When I entered my zip code, and also entered the city that I live in, all of the surrounding agencies were readily available and working but not the city I live in, I had to set up a favorite list to pick up the city frequencies.Other than those minor problems, I think Uniden has really come out with a superb product. I have and will recommend HomePatrol-1. November 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Almost perfect Ok, I have had a scanner on me or in my vehicle since 2007, this scanner solves most if not all of my problems that I would have with a conventional type scanner. The ease of use with the touchscreen is worth it, even if you do not like touchscreens, out of the box it will give you the tactile touch of a button when you press on the screen. I love my radioshack scanners for the fact that they mount into jotto desk/troy/havis consoles but this scanner is worth not having that feature. In the past, If I wanted to do a cross country trip and listen to the police/fire/ems I would have to program my scanner everytime I move 100 miles. With the massive database that it contains, you know exactly who is talking, in what state, city, county, and frequency system. With a gps unit attached, the database will adjust to where you are and provide the appropriate radio traffic for your area. This alone is worth paying the money for this scanner. However the GPS attachment port would be much better if it had a screw attachment to hold the gps cable in place (think like what panasonic toughbooks use to hold their cables in place). Lastly, I recommend using a RAM mount to mount your scanner anywhere in your vehicle. I have not seen any other manufacturer that makes mounts for them. October 21, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect Emergency Radio, especially for Nubees. Okay, I'll be the first to admit it.... I was new to Scanners when I purchased this one. I bought it after several frustrating experiences with my Dads "Old School" manual modle I inherited. The Home Patrol Radio was made for me. It does more and easier than I even hoped for. I've been using it for over a year now, and while checking out the Uniden Home page, thought I'd write and tell ya how awesome it's been to hear and understand several BIG events before they are even on the NEWS! Plus listening to our local Law Enforcement and Gov. Agencies as events unfold. All without a hassle, because of the superior Engineering of this great product. Thank You Uniden and Good Scanning to you all. Best Regards. October 19, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Difficult & Twitchy It required 4 attempts to install HomeSentinel. Both Quick Guide and Owner's Manual frequently confuse subjects and objects within a sentence. This makes unclear what is trying to be said. The thought that shorter is better and the less emphasis on creating a cogent, grammatically complete thought seems to be the fad within manual writing. Each time the scanner is turned on the "SD Card Error" is displayed. I have been unable to resolve this issue.Next, even with 20/20 vision the "lock/unlocked" battery compartment symbol is difficult to discern. The size of the symbol is too small, the symbols do not have any relief to aid by using touch and finally there is no contrast to distinguish the symbols from the back of the unit. The unit when it works does work as advertised. There could be many refinements. September 16, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by needs more firmware upgrades. this is a excellent unit, but it should retain your current settings after you shut it off and turn it on later.it does not do this.you have to set it up again.a regular scanner goes right to work when you turn it on.it has a high battery drain even when it is off.it did help me find the new trunking frequencies for new london,ct.i was then able to set up my other scanners.scancat was not able to do this.i did not receive any batteries with the unit.if uniden would just send me their address where to mail the invoice,i would gladly do it.i bought the correct batteries for it at the navy subase as i am a retired veteran.frequencies can be accessed using the included software.it would have been nice if the scanner had a frequency readout.would have saved me a lot of trouble.it is now set up and running fine.it is just not to sensitive.i have a programmed gre600 sitting just five feet from it and it picks up much better.i put a much better antenna on the homepatrol 1 and the gre600 still does better.but it is nice and loud and portable.i would have bought another one except for the fact that if shut off and then turned on,you have to set it up again.that part is for the birds.i have another uniden scanner 996t mounted in the rear firewall which i control from the dash in the front.when i turn it on,it goes right to work.now that i have the new trunking frequencies in it,i am all set for now.i do not need another home patrol since it does not do the same.this one will come in very handy.i hope that they do improve the firmware.make it more sensitive. Rated 3 out of 5 by Easy scanner to program. If it wasn't for the additional money for an upgrade you need for this scanner to use all of its features, it would be perfect. June 28, 2013
