Answer: 
According to Square D, the late open contact has a longer actuator, so it takes longer than a direct-acting contact to open. The late open is designed to allow for overlapping contacts. In an example, if you have a direct-acting normally open contact and the late open contact (which is normally closed) when you actuate the contacts, the normally open contact will close before the late open contact opens.

Contact block (item 5B533) attaches to button (item 5B512) by way of a small set screw in the contact block that is tighened down to the operator with a small flat blade jewelers screwdriver.
