Answer: 
A hot stick is an insulated pole, usually made from fiberglass, used by electric utility workers when engaged in live-line working on energized high-voltage electric power lines. They protect the workers from electric shock.

Depending upon the tool attached to the end of the hot stick, it is possible to test for voltage, tighten nuts and bolts, apply tie wires, open and close switches, replace fuses, lay insulating sleeves on wire and various other tasks.

Grainger product number 5ZV83 is supplied with a knotched prong and is primarily used with voltage detectors attached.

I have one with a 2009 manufacturing date and it's still in the plastic package-never been used. Is it good or does it need to be tested?
