I found one of these rods deeply embedded in my large pine tree in my woods. We have been unable to pull it out. What are these used for? I am wondering this because I would like to know how it got there. Thanks for your time!

Answer:
Without having more information, it will not be possible to answer this question with accuracy. For your consideration; it is a possibility that this rod was installed as part of a repair. There are circumstances in which a tree will need extra support and strength, at a crown or union. This is also used to assist against high wind damage.
There may also be a possibility that the rod is there to prevent anyone from cutting the tree, as a Lumberjack would not want to damage any tools or equipment when the rod is identified.
