I was told that when you change the fan, there is a certain elevation adjustment that is required. Is it okay to place the new fan measuring the distance from the top of the motor shaft to be the same as the old one was?

Answer: 
Yes you would want to make sure you install your new fan blade in the same location on the shaft as the old one was.
