Hello,
This pump can be mounted in in a vertical, or horizontal run of pipe, You should "index" the pump according to the installation instructions, prior to start up be sure the unit is filled with water. This is a very good unit and should give long reliable service, providing the unit is installed according to directions and specs.

Answer: 
This pump has 1/2 inch sweat connection design is for mounting in line using 1/2 inch copper pipe. Per the manufactures instructions do not use any pipe size other than 1/2 Inch for this model.
