Hello,
This is a great question, and the answer is maybe yes maybe no. The toilets trap way is designed to accomidate waste and water at a given speed, if your old tank for instance has a flush rate of say 3.6 to 4.0 GPF this tank will not work. The connection to the old toilet might not match up also. You would be better off to replace the Toilet Bowl at the same time, most toiiets by law now are required to be efficent so finding an older style tanks that flushes that amount of water will be difficult. But you can take a small bucket of water 1.6 gallons, pour it quickly down the toilet with some Toilet Papaer in and see if it flushes it completely. If it does then this tank will work. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for choosing Grainger Ask & Answer!

Answer:
Hello,
Most toilets tanks operate by gravity, flush the handle and a large flapper opens causing the water in the tank to fall thru the trapway of the bowel. This rapid "flush of water causes it to carry the waste and clean water thru the trap and down the toilet, the only time you woulld require a pump would be if you had very low water pressure.
I hope this answers your question, thanks for using Grainger Ask & Answer!
