Rated 5 out of 5 by First power outage today - generator worked just fine Bought this unit a little over 1 yr ago - had a manual transfer switch installed by a local electrician. The unit started right up ( 2-3 pulls) when I first got delivery and ran it several times after that - very simple starting process.Winter of 2014/15 went to start the unit before a forecast snow storm and it wouldn't start !! - no matter what I did -- called Generac support line - first thing they asked is where I lived (northern NJ - temp low teens) - 2nd question - what weight oil was I using - I said the oil that was included (30W) - next step - change the oil to 5w30 synth - bingo! - started right up (3 pulls) . btw - oil info is in the owners manual....Anyway - today - local power outage - after an hour or so decided to go through the drill - unit started right up (3 pulls) - went through the process to switch between the elec panel and the generator - all was well - gas furnace working - frig ok - watch some tv - wife finished using washing machine - made some coffee - - 2 hrs later street power back on - switch everything back - ready for the next one.The only mystery is the instruction on "stopping the engine" - "...shut off all loads...never start or stop the engine with electrical devices plugged in or turned on..." my question - what happens when a propane tank runs out of fuel (at 3AM) ?? Short of trying to "guestimate" when a tank will run dry - not sure the best way to handle swapping out tanks.??John December 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Easy to operate this is the first time I have bought a LP powered generator. So far I have had no trouble manually starting it, however an electric start kit would help. I'm 74 years old and do have some problems in pulling the starter cord.Once out of the shipping container I attached the LPTank ( I chose a 40 pound tank, works well) it balances OK. I hope the generator starts in the cold weather we have in New Hampshire. So far it's been good. Very satisfied with my choice and recommend it to anyone who require a dependable generator fo what ever their use. November 3, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Satisfied with final decision I read many reviews on this product both on this website and others. I find the construction to be very good. It assembled easy and started on the first attempt after thoroughly reading and following the instructions. The pulling effort is more than a lawn mower or snow blower but as long as the standard procedure of 4 pulls doesn't increase with time, it's acceptable. I really think an electric start option should be offered and is the only reason for my less than perfect review. Many people stated the same thing and I even saw a FAQ asking this with no foreseeable redesign being considered. I tested the unit under a small load for 15 minutes. I will be installing a transfer switch over the next week or two and will then perform a full test. I love the propane option for not worrying about gas degrading and for its higher availability during widespread power outages. October 10, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Backup for Emergencies I am a 1stTimeGenUser. I chose this product for use during emergency power outages, and I appreciate the portability and practicality of this unit. I have done the initial startup, and it is easy to use. I have nothing negative to say at this point, which is great, but I will have more to say about this product once I have used it for it's intended purpose. October 2, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by One Thing Missing Electric start would make this a nice tool. Hard starting when cold but still a nice unit. A starter that you could convert this model to would be nice also. September 11, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Manual start is a hard pull I like the generator but there are a few things to be aware of.There is no electric start and the manual pull cord takes a bit of effort to get it started. I am almost 50 but physically fit and it is a hard pull. I don't think most women are going to be successful in getting it started. The engine is constant and does not rev down like the gasoline versions and it is a little noisy. The benefit to this is the generator does not bog down when it is starting a load.I love not having to worry about a carburetor getting fouled up by gasoline. This greatly out ways any cons for this product. And propane can sit in the tank on the shelf for a very long time, unlike our current gasoline, which only lasts a couple months unless you add stabilizers. The solid wheels on this unit are great. I need to get some for my other equipment. August 24, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by nice generator I bought the lp 5500 to replace another brand that was impossible to get parts for. I went with Generac knowing that I could get parts and service if need be. I won't use anything but propane for the following reaasons. No worry of it gumming up when not being used, no hassle of gas cans, and it can be ran off anything from a 20 lb. BBQ cylinder to a 1000 gallon domestic tank. An electric start would be nice but so far it has always started by the 3rd pull. In the winter I plan on putting 5-30 synthetic oil in it. It is a great generator and looks good too! June 4, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by So far, so good I just set this up as a standby for parts of the house. It tested well and is less noisy that a comparable gasoline generator. It is also smaller and eliminates the worry of gasoline contamination. I would really like to have a model in the 8KW range with an electric starter; but so far, so good. May 28, 2015
