All HID ballast and lamps have an ANSI number on them. Ballast and lamp ANSI codes should always match. For example: if you have an M59 ballast, you should use an M59 lamp for example.

In the instance of Grainger Item # 3APT6, it has a ANSI Code of S51, and therefore must be matched to a ballast with the same ANSI Code.

"Multi-Vapor" is trademarked term General Electric (GE) uses to describe thier Probe-Start Metal Halide Lamps. The average 400W Probe-Start Metal Halide Lamp has an ANSI Code of M59, and therefore must be used only with a ballast also rated with ANSI Code M59.

To switch to a different type of lamp generally requires the replacement of the ballast, except in rare instances. The complexity of those exceptions is too involved to address here.
