Hello Jennifer,
Yes this pump will work fine for that, another pump that would work well for that is a 4XE90 that pump comes with 1/2" hose barbs. Keep in mind this pump is designed for intermittent operation, 20 minutes on 15 -20 minutes off. I know this sounds like a short time but look at it this way, 55 Gallons divided by 2 = 27.5 minutes of run time. So this pump will work fine or the 4XE90 which cost's a little less and pumps 2.9 GPM!
