Rated 2 out of 5 by Keep Breaking I Just broke my second pair of hf5's.In terms of sounds quality so is these the best headphones I ever used, I think on average they get used 3 hours per day.WHen I need to focus on work and when I go to the gym.The long gelcap fit's super well, and the finish material on there makes them stick really well in the ear. I can't remember the last time they accidentally fell out.MY biggest gripe is that they seems to break quite quick, My first pair lasted me 11 months, then I tried some other brands in the meantime. I just never seemed to find any other plug with the same kind of fit.The last pair that I purchased lasted me 15 months, left earphone just died on my when I was at the gym yesterday. I switched out the filter when I got back home but it still dead.So I'm know in Limbo if I want to move on and try another brand again, last time so did I go with ultimate ears and hated them after a few hours.Since I don't have the receipt anymore and bought them at an airport so could I assume no warranty. So my thought is if you use them a lot and do sports maybe try to find some other brand that can take an active lifestyle, or maybe I just gotten some Monday example products. Rated 4 out of 5 by Great sound, Great noise isolation but cables need to be more robust I bought these so that I could listen to music in a loud environment where it would have otherwise been impossible without turning the volume up to dangerous levels. The product fulfilled this requirement very well. I took me a while to get the hang of putting them on and getting a good seal but once I got past that I found the sound quality and noise isolation to be excellent.Unfortunately, there is one major drawback. The cables are not very robust. Wearing headphones on the go, inevitably results in them being tugged on, tangled up in bag straps, and on one occasion being snagged on a door handle!.My first pair lasted me only 7 months. Very reluctant to buy another pair unless there is an upgrade in the cable quality.Given the price, i would expect the cables to be reinforced, especially around the earpiece and jack.I'm writing this review after purchasing a set of noise isolating phones from another manufacturer. For comparison, they are really robust, but don't sound as nice, and really don't isolate sound. Etymotic really stands out on the noise Isolation. So, Etymotic - PLEASE start fitting decent cables to your head sets. I'd happily pay more for a product that is going to last. February 20, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by The best sounding speaker I've ever heard I've counted on Etymotic earphones to protect my hearing while playing drums and doing yard work for the last 10 years, and I will never buy any other earphones now. They have protected my hearing while maintaining the clearest, most balanced sound I've ever heard. I have a $700 set of Focal components in my car, $500 B&W in my home, and $400 Shure In-ear monitors, and I think the Etyomotic HF5 sound superior to all of them, with more detail. While drumming, I've literally been scared out of my seat because I heard people talking in the back room of the studio just before they started the track (on an album I've listened to my entire life). It's always impressive to hear new details to the music that have never stood out before. February 13, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by who says it lacks bass? Sound(the most important aspect)...These are my first set by Etymotic.I got them a day ago and they do deliver! They are the best sounding ones in this price range in my opinion(i own a Reid Heath Acoustics ma750 and a se215 by Shure), it was love at first listen. They are what i've wanted sonically from a long time now. They literally opened my ears to a level of detail that i hadn't heard before. It reminded me of the time as a kid when i had received my first set of portable music player( a cassette walkman) which had opened up a whole new world of musical listening experience for me.I've read reviews of people complaining about the lack of bass which i find surprising because they have ample bass. The bass in the hf5s is strong, tight, precise and accurate. It's not boomy, bloated or extensively enhanced, which is exactly the way i prefer it.Neither are the mids and treble enhanced. They are just aimed at being accurate, the way the music was meant to sound when recorded. I've used it for every genre of music including rock,metal.hip-hop,classical,pop,electronic,noise,accoustic, folk etc. etc. and they shine in each case. They can be used for daily listening as well as monitoring. Now about the design and build quality...I personally don't prefer the long cans cause they stick out and one cannot sleep sideways with them on.The cable length is not an issue for me since i'm short and it makes them more portable, but i can see how it can be an issue for those who are around 6"3 or more. The cable is thin but is said to be kevlar reinforced so i cannot comment on it's durability yet. Although detachable cables should be a must on headsets/earphones that cost above 120$ in my opinion.Other than that it looks pretty decently built.Fit...This is where a lot of people complain about and Etymotic gets a ton of hate for.It is very important to get a perfect fit and a good seal in order to unlock the true potential of these amazing earphones. The tri-flange tips is not everyone's cup of tea as it goes very deep inside your ear canal and can cause discomfort. I personally use a set of foam tips which came with the se 215s, and it works just fine for me.I would recommend people who are unhappy with the provided tips to invest in a set of compatible comply foam ear tips. That's all i have to say about the hf5s.I'm very happy that i ordered them.I'm enjoying each listen.I most certainly recommend them to any one who loves music and who is not a "bass fanatic".Just make sure to get a proper seal with the right set of tips. Rated 5 out of 5 by #1 ear phone out of all I had I owned sony ear buds, Bose IE, Shure SE 215 and etc.. but these pair of earphones are the best. These earphones totally destroy all other earphones by far. at first I was afraid that the earphone's string looked weak but almost 2 years into them. I accidentally washed them in the washer... still working perfectly. These are not water proof btw do not test. Ok first of all if you are looking for earphones for crazy bass then look away. These are not for you but if you are like me who enjoys Classical musics or for normal use then these are the best earphones for you. At first you won't realize their potential until your ears get used to them. once they shape into your ears, these are incredibly comfortable and they isolate outside noise. Very accurate and very lively? you feel like you are at the concert. Very detailed but when the wire gets in contact with anything it makes that vibration noise so do not use these in situations where you move around a lot like working out. By the way I wore these for 12 hours in 1 day and my ears were totally fine. The sounds are very relaxed unlike some others which hurts your ear. If I had to pick on something, it makes static noise when you try to listen to crazy bassy songs. Anything for movie sounds fine it's just few songs with heavy bass. I am not an audiophile so I have no clue why. Comes with 2 year warranty and these earphones isolate outside sounds and I think it doesn't leak that bad either. All in all almost perfect earphones. Rated 1 out of 5 by Broke in 3 months I am EXTREMELY dissappointed in the quality of these headphones. They sounded great when I first got them. After 3 months of NORMAL use in the gum the right speaker blew. I have no bass at all now and only hear crackeled garbage. I chose these earphonsed because of the reviews I read and I regret it. I was new to this brand but will never buy another Etymotic product in the future. There are 100's of choices for earbuds at this price point and I STRONGLY suggest you look elsewhere. Rated 5 out of 5 by Best quality I've had, also built to last. I'm an avid music listener with wildly varying tastes that call for a wide range of sounds that the hf5s have always delivered on, while also blocking all outside noise, they have the qualities of large headphones packed into a tiny earphone. They also are built to last far longer than any trashy throw-away earbuds you can buy from a gas station or chain retail store, the wax filters and reinforced cables are genius and alleviate any ways for the earbuds to die out just from using them. Overall these are the best earphones I own, well worth the money, and if in a few years these earphones do die out. I will be going back to Etymotic for more audio greatness. January 12, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Durability is an issue I've had several pairs of Etymotic Earphones over the years and I really do like them. There are plenty of reviews here that speak to the quality of the sound so I'm not going to add to that. I have had more than 1 pair simply due to durability. The cord deteriorates over time, especially if you using them daily, in which I do. My main use is the gym. I'm active in the gym, which I think is expected, and I constantly see small tears in the cord like the jacket is drying out and falling apart. I get about a year out of them. The company does not have a replacement cord that can be installed by the user and the cost to replace the cord is about the same as buying a new set. Rather disappointing. Even with this flaw, they are still probably the best out there for the price if you are really into sound quality. The also fit nice and offer great isolation when fitted correctly. Just go easy on the cord. December 13, 2014
