Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing Sound, but a bit fragile After my old Sony headphones gave out, I needed some new ones with Apple mic and controls for my iPhone. Etymotic came recommended from an NPR story, and I came to look through their products. While I was weary of buying $80 headphones, I am extremely glad that I did. I hear such fidelity in my music that I feel like I'm hearing new music compared to my old headphones. Their noise blocking ability is very good IF YOU USE THE CORRECT TIPS. I cannot stress that enough. I at first used the default ones they shipped with but in order to create a good seal, required pushing them uncomfortably far into my ear canal. I then used the oversized versions for a while, and while they sealed better, they still bothered my ears. Finally, I tried the cylindrical foam tips, and they worked perfectly! It's like my own mini concert hall. Try the different tips out with varying levels of noise to find the one that you're most comfortable and best fits your ears.Be weary though. I used to carry my headphones wrapped up in my pocket. After about a year, the right bud stopped playing audio due to the cord breaking at the split. Thankfully, these come with a 2-year warranty, and Etymotic replaced them. Now I carry them in the included pouch that they come with, and they're doing fine. If you use headphones in anything particularly strenuous or somewhere they could get jerked and pulled hard or often, I would advise not using these, as their cord is somewhat fragile. Rated 3 out of 5 by Fragile cord; lasted only six months; controls inconvenient Love the sound quality but these are not durable enough for use with a full face motorcycle helmet. The cord began splitting and fraying within three months and the control buttons stopped working soon after. Also, the inline control is positioned up near the ear bud so it is not reachable while wearing a full face helmet. Rated 5 out of 5 by Far exceeded expectations After having used a couple of relatively cheap earbuds and a Sony active noise canceling headphone I was in the market for something better to go with my iPhone, both for mild exercise at the Y and for yard work. I've now had the mc3 for a little over a month and am delighted with it. While it took a little while to decide which of the tips was best, I finally settled on the larger conical ones. It took a little while to get the knack of putting them in, and I'm still not very good with the right one (I suspect my right ear canal has a different size/shape than the left.) I can wear them all day without any problem. The noise isolation is fantastic -- our grass isn't yet long enough to cut, but I tilled the garden a few days ago with an 8-hp Honda tiller. Unless the shift lever was in place where it was rattling, I couldn't hear the tiller even when the music was stopped. Sound quality is terrific -- I use it for classical orchestral, choral, and solo singers and I hear things I never heard before, no matter which of my audio systems I was using. I have no complaint about the bass -- being a choir singer I guess I like my music accurately reproduced! My only problem was that not too long after I started to use it I had problems with the remote control (stop/start/volume, etc.) -- every now and then the control stopped working, usually when first plugged in on any given day, although the earphone part continued to work fine. For awhile I thought it was an intermittent problem with the mc3 and that I was going to have to get it replaced, but after a lot of experimenting I realized it was a problem with the iPhone 5s software somewhere. While plugging and unplugging the headset sometimes fixed the problem, the only fix that always worked was to reboot the phone. (That in itself proved it wasn't a hardware problem.) Oh, the build quality is great and the cord & other hardware quite rugged. And they stay in my ears very well, despite a cord being caught on a bush! (They have never fallen out or been pulled out accidentally.) May 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by THE Product Bought these for riding a motorcycle and save my hearing at the same time. I can ride at freeway speeds and listen to music at volume levels lower than those I use with my Bose Noise canceling headphones. When paired with the Awareness app, these make cruising the highways more enjoyable and safer.PS - You HAVE to wear earplugs while riding. Motor plus wind produces 120db+. Go without, go deaf. September 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent balanced sound, slightly uncomfortable long term use. I'm a full time musician and music instructor. a large amount of my time is spent recording and listening back to recordings. When look for earbuds I spent a lot of time doing research looking for earbuds with noise rejection and flat frequency response. and ended up with the MC3s. My initial reaction was blllahhhh.... After burning in for a few days I fell in love with them. This also may be my ears adjusting as well simply because so many headphones have a lot of bass boost. Now, these are the go to earbuds for a lot of my mobile recording projects. The frequency response is flat and somewhat sterile. So, you get an accurate representation of the recording. This is a somewhat different philosophy than most headphones but one that is extremely important for professional musicians. July 17, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome product at a very reasonable price! I have absolutely loved the Etymotic mc3 earphones! They play incredible music quality and are built very well. They create a tight seal in your ear and do not fall out easily. They block out all outside noise- more than ANY other earphones or headphones (active or non-active noise cancellation) that I have ever used. I would highly recommend them to any person looking for a quality set of earphones for a mid-tier price! June 4, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 Poor quality for the price I have had these for almost a year. Almost daily use. The noise blocking was great until... The right ear piece broke in half when I was putting it in my ear. I had to pull it out with a set of tweezers because when I attempted to pull it out because the wire broke when I attempted to get it out after it broke. The price of $100 should come with a set of earphones that last longer than a year. I will not purchase another set. June 4, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love the sound quality. These headphones are excellent in their reproduction and clarity. I have tried most major brands of headphones and this pair is the most life-like and true. The comfort of fit is also an excellent asset of this headset. The microphone also has great reproduction clarity. The other party on all of my calls has no trouble hearing and understanding. I am extremely happy with this purchase. June 3, 2013
