Rated 1.5 out of 5 by 8reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Need to sell solely replacement screws alone! I've used this piece for years in my work, and I often have to purchase a new one because just the screw has either become stripped, or today, the head of the screw completely came off. On top of that, today for the first time the #409 pieces, the small wheels were not held securely and broke quite quickly. December 7, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by The screw is stuck Like the others, I am no longer able to use the mandrel as I can't undo the screw to remove the cutting wheel that's on there. November 20, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Works well I have used this mandrel on my speed saw with cut-off wheels several times over the past few years and it hasn't failed me. The cut-off wheels tend to break but the mandrel bolt holds tight. I just purchased another one because I finally lost the holding bolt (it is so tiny). I was worried about the problem other reviewers recently mention where the bolt was so tight that it strips when trying to remove it from the mandrel. I did not have this problem with the new one I purchased, nor did I have this issue when I first purchased one years ago. I use a very small flathead to remove/adjust thebolt...easy removal, no stripping and not even the slightest damage to the slot. I took a star off because their newer 'EZ lock' mandrel seems like a much more efficient design. I didn't buy that one because it was not worth 3 times the cost for the number of times I use it. Rated 1 out of 5 by Can't get the screw out. I'm having exactly the same problem as so many other reviewers. The screw is so tight that after an hour of trying, I still can't get it out (and I've injured my fingers in the attempt). Therefore, I can't attach the cutting disc, and the tool is useless. Very unhappy. September 7, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Poor quality I have not been able to use it because the tiny little screw is in there so tight that I can not get it loose. It will not budge! I was looking forward to using it today. After having trouble with it, I went on line thinking maybe the screw is not suppose to come out and I was doing something wrong. After reading the other reviews, I believe my continued efforts to try to remove it will prove to be a waste of my time. I do like everything else about the Dremel tool, but this accessory is a big disappointment. July 2, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Poor Design Opened a new Dremel Multipro accessory kit with the Rotary Tool Mandrel. As the other review suggested it stripped before I could use it once. I don't understand why this would use a flathead. Should have TORX or Philips screwhead to prevent stripping. February 28, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Not happy I had to cut a slit in a thin wall heating duct , this weekend and similar to other review I stripped the threads on three mandrills doing the job.I had to finish up using a hacksaw. Not used to this poor quality from Dremel February 16, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by disappointed The securing screw stripped within a minute of use. Had to go to the hardware store and buy another. The new one stripped as well. My project remains unfinished. The first was new as part of a Dremel tool and accessaries kit. The second was Dremel brand as well. Those tube shaped sanders to not fit into the holders and come off while sanding. Waste of time and cash. September 13, 2014

Answer:
Yes, this mandrel is needed to attach the sanding discs to the tool. You’ll need to remove the screw on the tip of the mandrel, insert the screw through the center of the sanding disc and then thread the screw back onto the mandrel.
