Answer: 
Several things can cause this most perplexing problem. One thing can be a weak or intermittent connection in the motor winding circuits. This would cause the magnetic field relationship to vary during start-up, thus cause the bi-directional problem.

Greetings - I am looking for a like-for-like replacement for a Dayton 5X847N relay which has burnt out. Is this item a suitable replacement, and if so, is there documentation available describing any differences between the two items? Thank you.

Answer: 
5X874 and 5X847N should essentially be the same item. The "N" references the version of this item. The functionality of the unit should be the same, there may just have been some small change made to the relay but nothing that should affect functionality and they should be interchangeable.
