I am building a prototype test bed for demonstration-of-concept. I need a 1/4 hp motor with about a 6" long shaft for simplicity of construction, and it needs to be variable speed about 100 - 1000 rpm. Actual power consumption will be about 0.1 hp, but I want it to have good speed regulation if the load should temporarily fluctuate. It needs to be dirt cheap if possible. What are my options? Would a condenser fan motor operate at variable speeds with the right variable frequency control? Which ones?
