Rated 5 out of 5 by Ariens Compact 24 - good performance and value in a smaller package I've had the Compact 24 for 2 years and have endured 2 New England winters with it and can recommend it as a solid performer for the most part. The all steel construction (especially the chute) and the Briggs & Stratton lump that powers it make it the stand alone performer in the compact class. PROS: Easy one pull start even on the coldest of days (never had to use the plug-in electric start it comes with). Throws even medium to heavy density snow quite a distance. Controls are easy to use and engage. The result of these items allows me to clear my driveway in short order. The blower's size means it doesn't occupy a big footprint when stored in the garage. Ariens years of experience in the trade translate into the best built blowers in the business. CONS: The smaller wheels on the Compact 24 mean less contact surface area meaning the machine is susceptible to wheel spin on packed snow and/or icy ground. This issue becomes more pronounced on driveways that have a decent incline like mine. I purchased the chains and seems to take care of most of that issue. Also related to the blower's smaller size is that most of the unit's weight resides in the rear where the engine is located. This translates into the blower being somewhat lighter in the nose and prone to raising up and not making contact with the snow. This became an issue on my pitched driveway. I purchased the optional weight kit and it did help. OVERALL: A rock solid performer with some minor, but manageable issues.ADDITIONAL TWEAKS: Installed heated handgrips (work great). Installed "on/off" switch for blower's light; otherwise this light is on all the time, even in daytime use. NOTE: While the light is okay, it's somewhat small size and low height location on the controls housing make it a moderate performer. August 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product at a great price. This product has all the features a home owner could possibly need. The value is exceptional along with the durability , the size is perfect for the average person for storage and maneuverability . It chewed up and spit out everything mother nature threw at it. From drifting snow to snow plow debris on the apron she never shuddered . This was an extremely brutally cold winter for us and she always started up , first time every time. June 8, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good machine just wish it had a reverse good machine, bought it last year before we started getting snow and it worked as advertised. I wish it had a reverse gear in it, that would be my one complaint. Overall this machine did what i needed it to do without any mechanical issues. June 7, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best on the market This is simply the best in design, build quality, and operation. After years of shoveling or using a good quality John Deere single stage, this is simply far better.I compared most brands hands-on, and ended up with this one. The controls for chute direction and elevation work better than any other. Chute control is a major factor, especially for us city dweller who have limited space to throw the snow. I readjust direction and height frequently with little effort to pile the snow where I want. Finally, there is the brag factor. Anyone who sees the Ariens orange knows that I bought the best!!This has electric start, but I never use it. It starts on the first pull every time. It would be more hassle to hook the extension cord for electric start than to just give an easy pull to start. After two winters of use, I am happy with it. Although I get tired of Iowa winters (especially 2013/2014), it is actually fun to run this through the deepest of snows. I also help several of my neighbors, and remove snow from the street in front of my drive. May 10, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by easy to handle in wild weather we had over 415cm of snow this past winter and this snow blower was put to an unusual heavy load. It performed with no hesitation and I would recommend it . I found it was very easy on gas and through out the whole season, I never experienced a chute jam. May 3, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Ariens makes a great snowblower I really like this unit. It is indeed powerful and easy to muscle around. The only disappointment I have with the unit is the rather clumsy way required to switch to two wheel drive. Stopping to remove a pin, slide the wheel into position and replace the pin is just cumbersome especially during a storm. I realize it was my choice to buy this model, but in retrospect, I should have bought a more expensive unit that has some kind of clutch mechanism. April 26, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good value. Having had a nasty winter, I had to use my new snowblower quite a few times. Was very pleased at the way it handled big snowfalls. Great machine. April 25, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by My first snow blower in 25 years Was pleased with the quality of the compact 24 snow thro. Was surprised how easily it started in cold weather. The metal chute is a plus along with the many speeds.Would suggest that a faster reverse speed be installed. April 23, 2014
