Rated 4 out of 5 by Happy overall, but has some drawbacks Let me start by saying that overall I do like this snowblower. It handles bigger storms just fine. It throws the snow well and doesn't bog down even in 18 inches of snow. That being said, it is pretty slow, even at its fastest pace, so if there are only a couple of inches of snow it goes much slower than necessary to clear effectively. The biggest gripe I have so far is turning. It has nothing to assist you with turning around so you have to just wrangle it 180 degrees around. It definitely gives you a bit of workout, and if you have a gravel driveway like I do it pushes the gravel up into a mound where you turned. Otherwise, I am happy with the unit, I haven't had any issues and I live in the Tetons where we get 100+ inches per season. Just wish turning was easier, or I had realized how difficult it would be to maneuver before purchasing. November 17, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by One thumbs up... We bought this unit to help us in & out of a recent mtn cabin purchase. It was a stop gap purchase for the 13/14 winter.. Our Ariens has to work hard at times because were blowing snow that has been on the ground for a while plus it has to go through snow piles left by a metal cabin roof. After approx 8 uses here's my humble summary. It starts nicely EVERY time. The motor feels strong enough at all times. It's never died yet due to work load.Big snow blowers like this one move along at a SLOW pace & reverse is a crawl. ( My snow blowing area takes two hours.)This machine will try to crawl over wet, dense, packed snow and can literally try to crawl over some snow berms or end up stopped in tall wet piles. ( Stopped / stuck, I'm guessing, is hard on the track system. I'm seeing some failure in one track when this happens.)The light placement engineering could be improved to do a better job of lighting its path. The tilt back feature is very important for turning etc and the mechanism seems to hang up more often than I'm comfortable with. I don't force it because I think something will break sooner than later. ( I better study the manual too...)We may upgrade to some sort of plow but we'll definitely keep this Ariens for fine tuning tight areas. With snowblowers being in high demand this season, I think this model is a good long term value. In a perfect world it would be fun to test out the top five brands of bigger snow blowers so one could be comfortable recommending one to a friend. :)Thanks.#biLL February 17, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Snowblower All Around First big storm yesterday and I was able to start using this blower first thing in the morning. The machine started easily on the 2nd pull. The head light worked excellent in the dark and the machine performed flawlessly. The large gas tank allowed me to clear snow to the bottom of my my hill and back up. This is roughly 2/3 of a mile. I still had fuel to spare when I got back to the house. The handwarmers did there job. The unit has excellent shoot operation and love the easy controls. I used the snowblower for 7 hours straight and never had a clog. This was with 18 inches of snow. The tracks are amazing. I live on a mountain and the steep grade to my house makes getting plow trucks to the house impossilbe with this amount of snow. So I used the snowblower to walk up and down the hill 6 times. The snowblower never slipped and walked right up the hill clearing the heavy snow the entire time. This units build is very robust and well built. The tracked machine is excellent in just about every way except turning is a bit of a workout. Small price to pay and it sure beats a shovel. February 14, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Unit - Just Don't Expect "FAST" Results This unit has fantastic construction. Nothing "flimsy" about it. We didn't have much snow this year, but the snow we had was wet and very heavy. It threw it like a boss. My only gripe is that the fastest forward gear is painfully slow - it really needs a stepup ratio transmission. April 2, 2013
