Communicate Safety Message

In many workplaces across America, one can tell actual work is being performed only when the noise levels start to rise. The official term for this type of noise is called the ambient noise level, and it can vary widely depending on the location where the workforce and equipment are operating. Depending on the jobsite, one may already be wearing hearing protection on the manufacturing floor, on a repaving project along a busy highway or in a noisy multi-contractor construction zone.

Since many workplaces practice a “Culture of Safety”, much effort goes into verbal safety training. In addition, there is other important information that needs to be communicated in high noise environments, including shift change and production meetings, team task assignments, status “huddle-ups” and continuous improvement updates. Often a supervisor is left with 2 choices to make their message heard: shut down the production line and take the team to a more quiet meeting room or try to talk over the ambient noise level, competing with machines, forklifts or jackhammers.

 

Many instructional meetings can and should take place on the shop floor, as it may reduce the equipment downtime and eliminate the “travel time” associated with gathering your team together in a distant conference room.
