Washers

You never think about washers until you run out of them, but they are vital for a dozen different applications. Ensure a tighter join with a lock washer, or pre-load it with a wave washer. Don't forget an insulating flat washer to prevent galvanic corrosion if you have steel screws on an aluminum surface, or a countersunk washer for that finished appearance. Stock up now on washers at Grainger.

Answer:
Typically when installing a combination of a flat washer and a split lock washer; the split lock will slide on to the bolt/screw first. This will allow for the split lock washer to make direct contact with the bolt head surface. Next, slide the flat washer on to the bolt/screw; this will allow the flat washer to make contact with the split lock as well as the surface that the bolt will be securing against. The flat washer will have a larger diameter than the split lock washer, to provide the extra clamping surface. As the bolt/screw is tightened, the split lock will flatten; and provide “spring” pressure against both the bolt head and the flat washer. This is to assist in not allowing any vibration to loosen the torque specification.
