LOCK OPERATION

It’s important to make sure your ladder doesn’t roll while in use. Check out some common ways manufacturers help you stay safe and in one place.

Foot-Activated Lock Step

Stepping on 1st step drops rubber- padded feet to floor to immobilize ladder. Stepping on pedal raises pads off floor and engages all casters in rolling position.Typically found on rolling ladders 5 steps or higher.

Weight-Activated Lock Step

Stepping on ANY step drops rubber-padded feet to floor to immobilize ladder. Stepping on pedal raises pads off floor and engages all casters in rolling position. Typically found on rolling ladders 5 steps or higher.

Spring Loaded

Stepping on ANY step drops the rubber-tipped feet to floor to immobilize ladder. After stepping off, spring loaded casters lift ladder, allowing movement. Typically found on rolling ladders less than 5 steps.

TREAD TYPES

Sure footing when working up high is essential to going up or down a ladder safely. You can help avoid slips and falls by matching the right tread type to your work environment.

Perforated

Perforated holes provide
excellent slip resistance
and drainage.

Expanded Metal

Open step design prevents
debris buildup. For all
applications.

Serrated

Open grid tread allows
liquids to drain quickly.
For oily, wet,
or outdoor environments.

Rubber

Solid metal step with
nonslip ribbed rubber tread.
Ideal for use in office,
retail, or industrial environments.

SIZE CONSIDERATIONS

The higher you work, the wider your ladder must be in order to remain safe. Consider working height or height and width limitations on ladder dimensions.

Platform/Top Step Height

Subtract 5 to 6 feet from desired working height.

Overall Height

Consider ceiling or overhead obstructions.

Base Width

Typically the taller the ladder the wider the base. Ladders with a 24"-wide or smaller base are suitable for use in tight spaces or narrow aisles.
