I am going to use it to turn a spit for hog roasting. I already have a gear reduction box which is 30 to 1, so instead of using another set of pulleys or sprockets, I thought that this might work instead.

Answer:
Yes it could cause damage. You need something that will vary the phase of the incoming power to correctly slow the motor. Like a VFD, could be a correct solution.

Answer:
To be able to answer that question correctly I would need to know which GE motor you have, specifically, Generally speaking, it is not recommended that you use a dimmer switch to slow a motor as the controls that are used, for motors that can be speed controlled without damage, are made not only with a little more substance, but also control the waveform differently than most of your dimmers. Wattage is very important when using a speed controller; otherwise you will burn it out. If your motor is of the type that should not be controlled, then it is just a matter of time before the motor burns out, no matter what controller you have.

I have a very old Greenlee wood lathe, which is powered by an electric motor, a 4-position pulley, and a flat leather belt. The flat belt often slips on the flat pulley, and I am interested in converting to a variable speed elctric motor, with a v-belt pulley. Do you have variable speed (400 - 4000 rpm), single phase, 1HP electric motors that would work for this application? Also, with the current set-up, I would need a pulley with a large diameter arbor (approx 2 inches) on the lathe side.

Thank you

Answer:
The motor that you may want to consider is a DC type that employs an AC driven speed control(115VAC). We have them both. We would be happy to talk to you about that and a drive belt solution for your vintage lathe. Our Technical Support Team is ready to assist you, just give us a call and ask for Tech. Support.

Answer:
All of our low speed low torque gearmotors are parallel shaft in design, not 90 degrees. We do not have a 90 degree model in that style.

Answer:
The shaft diameter on a 25HP motor is usually larger than a 7/8" diameter. I think it would be best for clarity to call our Grainger's Technical Product Support Team at 1-800-Grainger. Ask for the Motors Team.

I understand this to be a double input with a single ouput mechanical drive. Although we have multiple devices to accomplish this, we do not have one self contained unit to do this at this time. For more assistance on this, call 1-800-Grainger.
