Answer:
Hey Jhand,

Are you working inside? How much headroom do you have available for rigging? What's your budget for this?

My first thought is to use three ropes attached to the overhead using three screw hooks. Attach the other end of each of these three ropes to screw hooks screwed into the edge of a 2x8 which will act as a spreader bar.

Get yourself a winch or block and tackle that is capable of lifting 250 Lbs.:
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/TUFTUG-Block-and-Tackle-4RU48?Pid=search

Attach it to the spreader and lift away. A bit of experimentation will teach you where you want the outlet to be located before you start the lift. YMMV

If you have room you could build a ramp up to the location where you want the barrel. The ramp will bear part of the load, depending on the slope, so the force required to roll the barrel up the slope will be less than the weight of the barrel. Again, use a rope and winch to roll the barrel up the ramp.

Answer:
Define "Limited Space". What size is this small storage room?

Are these motors essentially random, or are they several of each type/size? If they were stacked one on top of another, by type/size, would the top one be as good as the bottom one for your next application?

I'm envisioning a rail mounted hoist, or two, or three, depending on the configuration of your space:

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/trolleys/hoists-and-trolleys/material-handling/ecatalog/N-mtz?Ndr=basedimid10071&sst=subset&xi=xi

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/electric-hoists/hoists-and-trolleys/material-handling/ecatalog/N-mts?Ndr=basedimid10071&sst=subset&xi=xi

If you design your shelving so that you can add a shelf board on top of the last motor you stored, all you need to do is pick the top one off the stack, remove the shelf board, and pick up the next one down.

Answer:
First option is to eliminate the hazard by fencing off the area where the hazard exists, or raise the machine so the headroom above the passage is sufficient, or replace the machine with one that does not present a hazard to passers by. This is always the preferred solution.

Second option is to apply some padding. If the protrusion is cylindrical you can use pipe insulation like this:
https://www.grainger.com/Grainger/NOMACO-KFLEX-Pipe-Insulation-1WYF2?Pid=search

If pipe insulation is not adaptable to your application then use something like this:
