A jam light, horn or indication on an HMI is generally used to indicate the presence of a jam. A yellow or amber beacon is most common in the industry.
When a jam is detected, turn off the conveyor with the jammed cartons. Conveyors upstream must be turned off as well. It is best, if possible, to keep downstream conveyors running. The purpose of this is to make it easier for workers to clear a jam because the can push boxes towards the running conveyor to get them out of the way as they clear the jam. This is especially useful when the cartons are heavy or the conveyor is elevated.
Lastly, it is a good idea to place a jam reset push-button near the location of the jam. This prevents the operators from having to walk to the main control panel, which could be a great distance away.
Be aware.. typically, jam sensors are placed perpendicular to the conveyor in order for them to detect very small gaps between cartons. This is important for a high throughput system.
Also, depending on system design, slugs of cartons my create a false jam. There are several ways around this, and it is very dependent on system design and configuration.
