Answer:
You should get a compressor that is rated at 10 cfm or more. If you use a smaller compressor you may have to wait for it catch up. Good Luck Joe

Most I see are 5HP, 6 HP go up in price quite a bit. I asked if we were to use both depositors full on at the same time what size compressor should we have (so we don’t have to buy one each – sound good? Or is one for each better?)

How loud is this going to be?
If the HP is right and the cfm is higher, is that ok? What’s cfm? I don’t want to blow out the equipment.
Should I look for one on wheels or does it matter?

Answer:
Hello,
The term "CFM's" is Cubic Feet per Minute, this a measure ment of how much air you have at a given pressure. If you have a piece of equipment that requires say 10CFM's @ 50 PSI a Compressor that generates 10CFM's @90 PSI will run occasionally on off to keep up with the piece of equipment. If your equipmet takes 10 CFM's @ 90 PSI then this compressor will run constantly while the equipment is running.. Get the picture, the more CFM's your compressor pumps the longer between the start/stop cycles you will have. Your machine uses 8-10 CFM's at 90 PSI you shoud have a compressor that generates at least 2-3 times that 10 CFM's. Otherwise your compressor will run continiously, this will generate heat in the compressed air , moisture and other things. You do not size a compressor by horse power you sizes it by how much air you will need, the horse power is what it takes to get the job done..

I hope this answers your question, thanks for using Grainger Ask & Answer!

Answer:
I think you should just worry about your CFM requirement, not the horsepower. Based on that, a 5hp should be plenty.

To avoid "blowing out" the equipment, you need a regulator to step the tank pressure (whatever it is, but typically about 175psi) down to 90psi. Make sure the regulator has the CFM capacity you need, and a gauge so you can see what you're doing.

More horsepower or CFM can't hurt your equipment, but more pressure can.

Only you can decide if you want wheels, but most compressors in this size range will not have wheels; they are intended to be stationary.

Compressors are noisy. If you get an oil lubricated one (vs. oil-less) it will be a little quieter.
