Versatile Scotch-Brite™ brand turns 50
Rounding out its 50th year, the Scotch-Brite™ brand
is a leading business in virtually every country.
The uses of Scotch-Brite™ Products are so basic and so universal that, after 50 years, this power brand
is a mainstay in households, industrial settings and food service operations almost everywhere.
Fifty years ago, 3M combined three innovative technologies – abrasives, adhesives and nonwovens – to
produce a new product line, and Scotch-Brite™ Products were born. Over the next five decades the
brand became a household name and a trusted partner in industrial and commercial settings worldwide. In the world of powerful brands, Scotch-Brite is in a league of its own.
“Customers instantly associate the Scotch-Brite brand with quality products that they can trust,” said Chris
Holmes, vice president and general manager, Abrasive Systems Division. “They know they can count on
the Scotch-Brite brand to help them get great results and make their surface-conditioning jobs easier to accomplish.”
An indispensable part of industry
In the Abrasive Systems Division, hand pads were an early major milestone, along with abrasive discs
and brushes. Over time, a wide array of surface-conditioning products was developed and they have
changed the way the industrial world blends, deburrs, cleans and finishes.
“We know Scotch-Brite products help make tough jobs easier for our customers every day,” said Holmes.

A mainstay in commercial operations
In commercial operations, Scotch-Brite is synonymous with hand pads for cleaning pots, pans and
surfaces in commercial kitchens. The division produces hundreds of innovative products designed to
meet their special cleaning needs, for everything from heavily soiled griddles to the most delicate china.
For example, the Scotch-Brite™ Purple Scour Pad No. 2020 combines tough coiled fibers with a highscouring,
low-scratching abrasive to clean everything from kitchen equipment to vitrified china without
scratching.
