Stimulus Tax Incentives

Make sure you take advantage of the various stimulus tax incentives that have been extended through the Stimulus Bill. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 first established the energy efficiency tax credits that were effective in 2006 and 2007. The majority of these tax credits were for 10% of the cost, up to $500. On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (also known as the "Bailout Bill") to put many of the tax credits back in place for 2009, and increased the credit to 30%, up to $1,500. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) extended these tax credits to 2010.

Tax Deductions for Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings

  • $1.80 per square foot is available to owners or designers of new or existing commercial buildings that save at least 50% of the heating and cooling energy of a building that meets ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001
  • $0.60 per square foot for measures affecting the building envelope, lighting, or heating & cooling
  • These tax deductions are available on systems placed in service Jan. 1, 2006, through Dec. 31, 2013.
