Some floods develop slowly, with ample time for preparation, but flash floods often develop in only a few minutes. Flooding has caused more damage in the U.S. than any other severe weather-related event, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In fact, FEMA states "over the past 10 years, the average flood claim has amounted to over $33,000. " Learn more

Flood Recovery Tips

  • Avoid floodwater: it may contain oil, gasoline, or raw sewage.
  • Floodwater may also be electrically charged.
  • Listen for emergency information on a battery-operated radio or television.
  • Service damaged septic tanks, cesspools, pits, and leaching systems as soon as possible.
  • Buildings often sustain hidden damage in foundations: enter with extreme caution.
  • Disinfect everything that got wet. Mud left by a flood can contain sewage and chemicals.
