The Elite series was a best seller back then because how well they cleaned and how long they lasted. Unfortunately, the household Elite series was discontinued in the early 2000's but they still kept on selling them as a commercial version. Now that I have the Commercial version, it is a great cleaner! It grooms and deep cleans the carpets and rugs excellently and has no problem on my hardwood floor. It even has a tool port so that you can buy a hose and tools separately for it. It uses type A bags so the bags tend to last a long time since they are huge, it has a fingertip on/off switch instead of having it on the side like they used to, a long and sturdy cord, and it has great suction, and it's made here in the USA! Now, onto the negative things, the cord wrap turner, is barely moveable. You have to use a lot of force to turn it and it's badly designed. Some other bad things are that it has no headlight, takes a lot to change the belt, some assembly to do when you first get it, and it comes with no tools. Now onto the extremely unfortunate part, it was discontinued in December 2012. The Elite was made in the North Canton factory in Ohio, but it was shut down. You can still buy one on other vacuum websites, but you will have do do it fast before they run out. If you buy an Elite, it will last you forever and you will be extremely happy with it as long as you have it. They were introduced to be an inexpensive lightweight upright, but people loved them so much the Elites series became the primary Hoover model throughout the 1990s. It is not is not uncommon to find Elites over 20 years old still in service. The Elites use a Direct Air fan system that is the only way to clean a carpet. The large fan creates enough airflow and suction the lift and clean all types of carpet, including deep pile. In the case that the fan needs to be replaced, anyone with a screwdriver can replace it in under 30 minutes. The brush roll is one the few remaining that will actually vibrate the carpet, allowing the vacuum's airflow to remove embedded grit. The bristles are also stiff enough to remove pet hair in one pass. The Type A bag is so large you can go months without changing, with limited suction loss. Bags now come in HEPA filtration, which was unavailable until recently. I often clean with this machine in commercial settings, and not only has it survived small paper clips and staples, the amount of grit I find in the bags is amazing. Only vacuums such as the Elite can do this. If you need a good vacuum that can deep clean carpets and last for DECADES, I suggest the Hoover Elite! July 15, 2012

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mike {I've Been Called A LOT WORSE!} Has Stood The TEST OF TIME! I got mine in 1993 immediately following my divorce. The machine has QUITE a good AIR FLOW as well as AGITATION! THIS is OVER 2/3 of "Mission Accomplished" with ANY VACUUM! Especially since it uses DIRECT AIR FLOW. THAT's REALLY IMPORTANT!!!!!!! THIS is largely what enables it to get in 1 pass what the "Clean Air" models require SEVERAL PASSES! This Not ONLY saves wear & tear on the vacuum, but ALSO ON THE USER's BACK & ARM! It came with attachments. Unfortunately, during Moving/ReLocation they got lost! MY BAD! I just RECENTLY replaced the ORIGINAL BELT! Now THAT's A BELT!!!!!!! Yep, it's somewhat noisy. However, the noise is proof positive it's doing what it's designed to do! If you take care of them/do the usual preventative maintenance--THEY'LL LAST! For the price, as well as a Medium/Moderate duty vacuum--YOU SIMPLY CAN'T GO WRONG! March 3, 2012

1-3 of 3
